Comics – an update

Comics – an update

So I’ve really fallen off the wagon with routines since the run up to my wedding. I thought things would settle down after, but there always seems to be some pressing thing to be done. Paperwork for the marriage, then admin stuff for the house, then actually buying things for the house, which is so much fun but also so stressful because I’ve never spent such huge amounts of money all at once like this. My bank balance is not pleased, but the house does look lovely. We move in next week, which is exciting and terrifying and upsetting all at the same time.

Which is all a rambly way of saying, I haven’t been updating on my comic book purchases since MARCH!!!!

Rather than try to go into detail about all of them, I’ve just included the list below as usual, and will highlight a couple of issues that have had an impact.

A lot of the storylines had something to do with purpose, and finding yourself, and following your passion, which have really resonated with me of late as I struggle with those same ideas and soul-searching. A key example is Batgirl’s latest story arc. People seem to think I’m all about Wonder Woman, or Batman, but really, I think Batgirl has always been my jam. She’s smart, she kicks butt, she loves her dad and friends, and she’s a librarian – holla at your girl.

Issue #9 of Scales & Scoundrels was beautiful. In the post-issue narrative thing by the creators, they mention that they wanted to try something a little different. It’s largely devoid of any dialogue or text whatsoever, but the art and story are just awe inspiring. The series as a whole is really fun, but I’d recommend picking it up just for this one issue in particular to be honest.

I always look forward to the next issue of Champions. I never would have thought I’d be so invested in this series when I first picked it up, but it’s actually really really so good. There are some changes happening in the creative lineup as well as the actual team itself, but it’s still a really great read. Highly recommend this for anyone in a HS library who’s looking to beef up their collection but doesn’t want to go too heavily down the superhero route – it’s got enough popular characters to keep kids interested, but not so many that fuddy duddys might disdain it completely, and it has lots of very positive messages without being preachy.

Lastly – I made a note to myself to mention the cover art of Avengers #688, without saying why I wanted to mention it – so here’s the cover, draw your own conclusions.

That’s it from me for now, new month’s pick up should be happening sometime in the next two weeks so look forward to a post then!

(also, I haven’t linked up all the titles like I usually do – I might come back and do that later, but if I don’t, well, Google it. Or ask me. I’m always happy to help – ish.)
